Wouldn’t it be nice, if in the event of a computer virus with destructible capabilities and the initiative of ravaging computer’s across the nation, if someone could just turn the internet off. Shut it down so that the virus dies with it. Several governments all over the world have been thinking the same thing, and so an internet kill switch plan was devised to deal with this issue.
The original plan for developing a security system for internet was based on the possibility of Cyber warfare. Researchers now believe that the chances of a full system cyber takeover is quite unlikely and that by using an internet kill switch in the event of any occurrence could have several dire consequences. Here are just a few.
Cost of Using Internet Kill Switch
1. Communication- By shutting off the internet, communicating with aid agencies and other agencies would be jeopardized. The ability of the government to communicate through appropriate channels would be comprised, meaning that trying to immobilize several different organizations around the country who help during natural disasters or in times of domestic need would be cut-off.
2. Defense- The ability of the military to defend the people of the United States would be greatly jeopardized because the military would not be able to effectively communicate with one another. Deploying defensive troops in case of an attack would be virtually impossible.
3. Private Assets- Securing and protecting what falls in the realm of military and government sectors would be relatively easy, however, protecting private assets would be much harder with out the use of the internet. It’s hard to tell what could be relied upon to store and safeguard that information.
Although scientists now believe that it might not even be possible to turn the internet off, they still believe that doing so will have unforeseen costs
